ONCE upon a time the was a little girl whose name was Sherrie. Sherrie was terrible at spelling. She was really jealous of her sister Charlotte. Charlotte always got all of the words on the spelling test right. Just once Sherrie really wanted to get all of her own words right.
The next Monday during the daily spelling test, when Sherrie thought that nobody was looking she looked at her sister's test. But her teacher saw her and gave her a stern look. Sherrie tried to pretend she didn't know why. "Will she tell mom? Will she yell at me?" Sherrie thought. Sherrie felt scared and very ashamed.
Right before recess Mrs. Hazelnut asked Sherrie to stay back for a moment. “Why?” Sherrie asked.
“I saw you looking on Charlotte's test.” Sherrie felt tears coming to her eyes. “Why did you do it?” Mrs. Hazelnut asked. Sherrie didn’t know what to say so she just whispered “I-am-really-sorry-I-didn’t-mean-to-I-just-wanted-to-be-like-Charlotte-I-just-wanted-to-get-all-of-the-words-on-the-test-right-for-once.” Sherrie spoke so fast that it only took one breath to say the whole thing. And by the end she was on the floor gasping for air.
Mrs. Hazelnut rose and picked up Sherrie and sat her down in a chair and said “Sherrie, breathe - breathe. Now what did you say?” I---am---really---sorry---I---didn’t---mean---to---I---just---wanted---to---be---like---Charlotte---I---just---wanted---to---get---all---of---the---words---on---the---test---right---for---once.”
“I know you wish you hadn't, but I will still have to e-mail your mom. And if I know Mrs. Buttercup, she will not be very happy.”
“She won't.” Sherrie said miserably.
Sherrie tried to forget about what happened that morning. But as soon as she got home, Sherrie could tell that her Mom was really angry. Her Mom tried to ask her calmly what happened. Sherrie refused to answer.
Then Mom went on with the questions: Why did you do it? Didn’t you know it was wrong? But Sherrie still refused to answer. And then Sherrie started to cry.
Just then Charlotte walked in. “Charlotte, go over to Leah’s house. Sherrie and I have a very important conversation that you need to be out of the house for.”
“Great” Charlotte said excitedly. “What's the conversation about?” she asked “And where did Sherrie go?”
Sherrie was running down the street with her toothbrush, a sleeping bag, and her teddy bear. Five minutes later Sherrie had collapsed in the front yard of her best friend Sarah.
“Why are you in such a hurry?” Sarah asked.
“Can I stay here for while please?” Sherrie begged. “I ran away from home because my Mom got really mad. I don’t think she loves me anymore. I really think she hates me.” Sherrie sobbed.
“Sherrie why would she hate you? What did you do to make her so mad?” Sarah asked in wonder. Sherrie felt so ashamed of herself she didn't say anything. “I would be really mad if I were mom too.” Sherrie thought.
Sherrie spent the night at Sarah’s house. The next morning Sherrie exclaimed, “I want to go back home. Maybe Mom won't be so angry when I come back.” As soon as Sherrie walked in the door her mother ran up to her and grabbed her.
“Where have you been? I was so worried.“
“I ran away because I thought you hated me.”
“Sherrie dear I would never hate you. Just because I get really mad at you doesn’t mean I hate you. I will love you no matter what.”
“Well that's good to know,” said Sherrie running and jumping into her mom's arms.
“Now promise me something,” said Mom. “Never ever cheat again!”
Sherrie thought about how miserable and ashamed she felt and knew she never wanted to feel like that again. “Never ever will I cheat again,” Sherrie said confidently.
